Friday Lush: The Blackbird’s Frida Kahlo

If you’ve spent any time reading my blog you’ll know my fascination with the Mexican festival Day of the Dead – Dia de los Muertos. The annual event begins today and ends tomorrow. It’s the day where the dead are remembered, their souls encouraged to come back to earth for one day only, enticed with offerings of their favourite food and drink. It is a big celebration of life, and not mournful as you might expect. I’ve just made a promise to Lil that we’ll get to Mexico one day and experience it first hand. Until then we’ll collect gaudy skeletons and Mexicana, it’s becoming a bit of a theme in our house.
I made a watermelon cocktail last year which I dubbed Viva la Vida (long live life) as it reminded me of Frida Kahlo’s carved watermelon painting, the last she ever painted I think? I got a tweet from a bar in Edinburgh called The Blackbird to tell me about their own Frida Kahlo, a tequila based cocktail. I went to the bar last Friday and it was very good, I recommend it highly. I had to have a Frida in honour of the great lady herself. It would have been rude not to.
