A Happy New Year to you all!  It’s been a while since I posted on the blog, Christmas, New Year in Edinburgh, work and life in general has taken over as it’s wont to, but that’s all good, The View From the Table was always a fun project for me, not something to be getting stressed about.  But here I am, on a Friday with not a drop of alcohol to offer you, not the merest sniff of the barmaid’s apron.

Dear reader I have pledged to avoid alcohol for the whole of January, nine days in and it’s going swimmingly.  New Year was seen in on a sea of caiprinha, spiced rum and ginger, prosecco and champagne and New Year’s Day was seen in on a sea of ibuprofen, dry tortilla chips and Frazzles; the decision was not too hard.

If you’ve read this blog for any time at all you’ll know that I’m not the sporty type and as I’m no good at being silent, aside from feeding people tea and cake and waving a donation tin at them I have limited options for raising funds for worthy causes.  Avoiding alcohol for a whole month is a big deal for me so I thought it worthy of a few quid, with this in mind I, along with a fellow had-too-much-over-Christmas friend, signed up for Cancer Research’s Dryathlon.  It’s simple, don’t drink for a month, get people to sponsor you and help Cancer Research wage war on this most foul of diseases.  Or sponsor me if you’re feeling very generous *smiles and bats eyelashes*.   I will raise a glass and toast you with my sparkling water.  You can find our Just Giving page here.

As our team is called the Virgin Marys it seemed fitting to imbibe a perfectly mixed one this evening.  Make mine a double, with extra celery please.

Virgin Mary

Serves 2
Prep time 5 minutes
Meal type Beverage

What you will need

  • 2 High balls tomato juice
  • 1 lemon (half for juice, half to garnish)
  • 2-3 Sticks celery (two for garnish, one (optional) for blending into the drink)
  • 1 shallot (finely chopped)
  • dash Worcestershire Sauce (Ii use a veggie alternative)
  • dash Tobasco
  • salt and pepper
  • pinch dried cumin
  • pinch smoked paprika


Step 1 Add all the ingredients, except the lemon and celery stick for garnishing, to a food processor or a jug to blend. I use a stick blender and jug.
Step 2 Season to taste and pour into the glass, with or without ice cubes, your call.

      Barnes, I am inclined to agree with you. Madness! I’m having dinner with boozy friends tonight, it’s going to be TOUGH. Thanks for the nudge, fixed now.
